Sign of the Times

Sign of the Times by Harry Styles was a UK number 1 hit on Thursday, April 20, 2017 spending 1 week(s) at the top of the UK charts. Musically, it was described by critics as a pop rock and soft rock ballad. Its accompanying music video was released on 8 May. Rumours about Styles embarking on a solo career sparked in 2015, when it was reported that Sony Music wanted Styles to release a solo album during One Direction's hiatus. The idea of the song was conceived by Styles while playing chords on the piano in Jamaica. Styles explained to Rolling Stone that "The song is written from a point of view as if a mother was giving birth to a child and there's a complication. The mother is told, 'The child is fine, but you're not going to make it.' The mother has five minutes to tell the child, 'Go forth and conquer.'" The entire song was cut in three hours according to Bhasker, who called it "an instant classic-sounding record from conception to completion". The music video won British Artist Video of the Year at the 2018 Brit Awards and Best Music Video at the 2018 iHeartRadio Music Awards. It was nominated for two awards at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards: Best Pop Video and Best Visual Effects. As of August 2020, it has received more than 640 million views on YouTube.
