There have been 1383 UK chart single number 1s since 1952.
Named after the legendary raft used by Thor Hayerdahl in his 1947 south sea expedition, "Kon-Tiki" was written by Michael Carr (who also co-wrote "South Of The Border"). As a guitar instrumental it was ideal for The Shadows, and was recorded by the original lineup, becoming a chart topper in the UK. Produced by Norrie Paramor and released on Columbia (EMI), it was backed by another instrumental, "36-24-36."
